The used Ford EcoSport is a great choice for anyone who wants a great deal on a sporty, efficient drive. These extra-small crossover SUVs are known for their roomy interiors, solid handling, and smartphone-friendly technology. Before you test-drive any used EcoSports, however, it’s a good idea to consider how these crossovers have changed over time. Our used buying guide takes a look.

First-Generation Used Ford EcoSport: 2018-2022

The EcoSport debuted as an all-new model in 2018 and had its final curtain call in the 2022 model year. Although Ford didn’t produce this subcompact crossover for very long, it remains a solid used option, delivering a reliable, efficient performance and a very comfortable ride. These crossovers had a sporty side, too, because all-wheel drive was available for every trim model. The EcoSport is also known for its roomy cargo hold, delivering 20.9 cubic feet of space for your gear, more than most models in this segment.

Throughout its lifetime, the EcoSport was available as four trim models: the base S, mid-level SE, sporty SES, and classy Titanium. The EcoSport S was known for its low price tag, but it’s also nicely stocked with modern features, including remote locks, automatic headlights, and a rearview camera. The SE adds a little more convenience and even luxury, with fog lights, roof rails, LED running lights, and a sunroof. The sporty SES comes standard with a more powerful engine and all-wheel drive, and it’s the only EcoSport to deliver a sport-tuned suspension and black exterior trim. The SES also includes leather-trimmed seats and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. For the most luxurious version of this small crossover, look for a used EcoSport Titanium. These models come with extras you won’t find on other models, such as heated exterior mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, leather upholstery, and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system

There were two powertrains available throughout this generation:

• Turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine (123 horsepower, 125 lb-ft of torque)
• 2.0L four-cylinder engine (166 hp, 149 lb-ft)

Most trim models come with the base three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. The four-cylinder engine was available for any trim model, but it was standard for the SES. Any EcoSport with the four-cylinder engine also includes all-wheel drive. Both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission.

There were a few changes to the EcoSport you should know about. Here they are, listed according to model year:

• 2022: All-wheel drive becomes standard for every EcoSport trim model. The base turbocharged engine is discontinued, leaving only the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine available.
• 2021: Apart from a few exterior styling tweaks, this model year also gets a few new standard features. The SE and up now come standard with a cargo cover and package tray. The SES and Titanium add a power driver’s seat to their respective rosters.
• 2020: The 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot becomes standard equipment. The SE models now include an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen.
